The History of Trivia: From Rome to Jeopardy!
The word trivia comes from the Latin trivium, meaning the intersection of three roads where common people gathered to exchange gossip and information. In its modern sense, trivia emerged in the 1960s when Columbia University students Ed Goodgold and Dan Carlinsky published a best-selling book of quiz questions. Pub quizzes began in 1970s Britain as a way to fill bars on quiet weeknights. Trivial Pursuit became a cultural phenomenon in 1984, selling over 100 million copies. Jeopardy, created by Merv Griffin in 1964, redefined trivia television with its answer-as-question format. The internet era brought Sporcle, QuizUp, and HQ Trivia. Today, bar trivia nights are a weekly tradition in cities worldwide, and trivia apps attract millions of daily players.
